I’d just like to point out that either Jensen has all of a sudden started telegraphing his moves, or Dean was going for a hug too, and Cas just beat him to it.
He’s leaning forward with his arms up as Cas grabs him.
In contrast to the earlier hug with his mom, just to add.
He pretty much lets himself fall into Cas’ embrace. Then he tries to put on the ‘oh wait it’s not like I’m enjoying this right lmao’ but he’s not very successful.
And Mary’s just standing there lacking all context as to why her son is engaging in this clearly emotionally gripping reunion scene (who wants to bet that Dean didn’t go into much detail about the events of the previous 24 hours or that he’d intended to blow himself up to stop the Darkness if things hadn’t worked out…)
So she’s standing there kind thinking Um, is anyone going to bother to introduce me to this guy I almost just shot, or what? Helloooooo? Remember me? Your resurrected mother? Didn’t anyone teach you manners, Dean?
The thing is, Mary’s context is pretty much this:
Dean is a burly hunter in his late thirties who wears big boots and flannel. He carries guns on himself and has guns hidden around his house. A big violent man. He’s been sweet with her so far, of course, but she’s his mother, so that doesn’t count. As a hunter, he’s clearly an aggressive person in normal circumstances. Her little Dean has grown up to be a gruff large man whose life is filled with violence.
Comes in another large man wearing a dirty coat, clearly someone in this violent line of work. She knows how hunters are with each other, posturing and distrustful and generally ill-disposed–
And those two men melt into each other’s arms.

Why is no one talking about Cas’s halo? Why is no one talking about it showing up right when Metatron says that?
(Also: the lamppost halos that Cas has were pretty much all those caged looking lights for years. I haven’t done a study in Carver Era but they were pretty consistently the caged ones like in Bobby’s yard through the Apocalypse and at least halfway through season 6. I’m glad it’s a regular looking light now, at least.)
To explain what’s meant by saying Cas has a halo: he light attached to the lamppost is being used as a symbolic halo. Filming from this angle is not an accident, it requires special equipment and extra planning. It’s also cinematography 101 to not put big objects like this in the foreground because it can be distracting, no professional director would film this by accident. The camera was purposely angled to capture the streetlamp and Misha would have been directed to step toward it. Supernatural uses this kind of symbolism all the time, it’s one of the ways they tie ancient concepts like angels and demons into a modern setting.
In this particular scene there was symbolism showing the similarities and differences between Metatron and Castiel. When Cas first shows up we saw a neon blue cross over Metatron’s shoulder. Metatron walked away, Cas moved forward, and Cas was the one standing under the cross as he healed the dying man. In the above gif a similar thing happens, the lamp-halo is between both of them but Metatron moves back while Cas steps forward. They were both born as angels but Cas embodies our modern sentiment of what an angel should be, someone who helps humans, while Metatron has moved so far in the opposite direction that he’s chosen to earn a living off of human suffering.
